The images which Sakamoto Ryo gives to us in his writings have universal appeal. When I read his poems and other works, I am struck by his enduring love of Nature. The beautiful images he conjures up – dandelions and other wild flowers, clouds scudding across the sky, crows, and even humble chickens in a farmyard – these are seemingly simple in meaning, but all have powerful associations with Nature. As someone who has always enjoyed Japan’s natural beauty, I feel that Ryo Sakamoto wants to impart that love of Nature to as many people as possible. His work serves as a constant reminder that we will always depend on Nature for our existence.
